A Service Manager at the Salvation Army’s Devonport House Lifehouse in Plymouth has received recognition for her work with the homeless community by being named as a finalist at the West Country Women of the Year awards, held recently at the Crowne Plaza in Plymouth.
Virva Martikainen was nominated for the Inspirational Leader Award for her commitment to her team and the people whose lives she helps to transform, and received a runner’s up certificate. The annual West Country Women Awards celebrate and honour the achievements of women in the West Country, recognising their outstanding contributions to various fields and their positive impact on the community.
Virva expressed her surprise and honour at the nomination, saying, “I was completely surprised. I really appreciate the nomination, but for me it’s not about me as an individual, it’s about teamwork and the people we serve.”
Since taking the helm at Devonport House in 2021, Virva has worked tirelessly to promote a trauma-informed approach to support for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Devonport House, which provides temporary accommodation and housing support for up to 60 people, focuses on breaking the cycle of homelessness and addiction and helping people to move forward with their lives. The Lifehouse also has rooms for working individuals struggling with rental payments, giving them a chance to save and find more secure housing.
In December, the centre is bustling with Christmas activities, including baking, rock climbing, and a festive concert, helping to uplift the spirits of the service users. Virva said: “We see the value and worth of every individual. Many have faced stigma and isolation, and we aim to celebrate their strengths and resilience.”
Virva's leadership extends to comprehensive staff training and the establishment of a bereavement support group for families affected by substance-related losses. With an open-door policy, she ensures that both service users and staff feel supported and heard.
