Here's all the information you need to navigate Christmas with The Salvation Army in Maidenhead this year
Christmas Present Appeal 2024
If you wish to donate to The Salvation Army's Christmas Present Appeal, the Appeal is open in Maidenhead from Tuesday 12 November until Friday 13 December 2024. We are unable to accept donations after this date as we need time to distribute the presents. Our hall (address below) will be open from 9:30am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accept donations.
We are collecting new unwrapped toys and gifts for children who might not otherwise receive a Christmas present. The gifts will then be wrapped and distributed to those in need. We believe every child deserves a new gift at Christmas so we are unable to take used or second hand items for the Christmas Present Appeal. Here are some suggestions of gifts to donate:
0-3 years: dolls, teddy bears, cot mobiles, baby clothes, bath toys, CDs of suitable music and nursery rhymes, puzzles
3-5: dolls and action figures, cars, lorries, DVDs and CDs (music and nursery rhymes), colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books, puzzles
5-9: educational games & toys, stationery (colouring sets, pencils, crayons, school sets), CDs & family friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, wordsearch, crosswords
9-12: games and toys, stationery, CDs, DVDs, books, T-Shirts, hair accessories, gloves, scarves, hats
13-16: CDs, DVDs, books, make-up and toiletries (please try to ensure non-allergic ingredients if possible), gloves, scarves, hats, T-Shirts, hair accessories
Over the years, millions of children and young people have benefitted from gifts donated to The Salvation Army. By giving a gift to our Christmas Present Appeal you can make a real difference in someone’s life at Christmas. Thank you for thinking of us and those we help, especially at this time of year.

Please use them!

Carolling Collectors
The sheets are now up in the Lobby for people to please sign up for our carolling sessions in Maidenhead (30 November), Bracknell (7 & 21 December), Marlow (14 December), and Paddington Station (18 December). You don’t have to be a uniformed Salvationist, as we have volunteer badges. And if you find it difficult to stand for 1¼ hours, then we can provide a chair. Please do all you can to support this important way of raising money for the corps and our community work.
Light Up a Life Remembrance Carol Service
On Sunday 1 December 2024 at 5:00pm, we will be holding a Light Up a Life Christmas Remembrance Service. The service will last about 45 minutes and will be followed by tea/coffee and mince pies. We are planning to hold it in the Hub (moving into the Hall if numbers are too great). The Christmas Tree in the Hub will become a Light Up a Life tree. You, your friends and family, anyone connected to the corps (online, for example) and anyone else who comes into the Hall whilst the book is open will be welcome to write anyone they want to remember over Christmas (no matter how long ago they passed away) in a book on Reception in the weeks before the service. These names will then be transferred on to stars that will be hung on the tree in the Hub and read out during the service just after the lights on the tree are switched on. A donation of £5 is requested from those wanting to remember. This will go to corps funds or to a charity of our choice (to be discussed and publicised when the book is opened).
Registration forms are now available on Reception.
Advent and Christmas Devotionals
As you may have seen, this year’s theme for Advent and Christmas is Living the Whole Christmas Story. To support our thinking around this, our Battle Drill Devotionals will take us through the whole Christmas story over 35 days from Sunday 1 December. If you have never used a devotional before, or if you are looking for a different devotional to cover Advent and Christmas, and you have not yet explored Battle Drill, then make the decision to join this journey today. There's a new devotional seven days a week. You can pick a copy of the week’s devotionals from Reception. Or you can click on the link - https://linktr.ee/battlefieldpodcasts - to listen, watch or subscribe to the podcast. You can even listen to it three times a day on Salvationist Radio!
Street Angels
Maidenhead Street Angels have lost several volunteers in the past months and it is getting difficult to allow a team on to the streets on a weekend night as a result.
Street Angels go out from 9:45pm until midnight or 1am (depending on how busy the town is) and volunteers are normally asked to go out once a month. Training, DBS checks, and a warm jacket are all provided.
If you would be interested in finding out about this valuable ministry which is a wonderful way of sharing God's love in a practical way then please contact Jeanette Lock at stangelsm@hotmail.co.uk and let Captain Rob know.
Maidenhead Care
Maidenhead Care is a local charity providing Good Neighbour help and practical support for the elderly, unwell, or disadvantaged.
Volunteers of all ages can be put to work, and you can volunteer regularly, occasionally, or in blocks of time (e.g. school term times). Mileage can be claimed for trips undertaken if necessary.
You could be a duty officer, receiving telephone requests from clients in your own home (on the charity's equipment) and matching them to volunteers. You could be a volunteer driver, ferrying clients to hospital, GP, or similar appointments. You could be someone who visits and chats with some of the lonely clients on a regular basis.
If you are interested, please telephone 07538 418448, between 9-5 on a weekday, and again, let Captain Rob know.

Children & Youth Conference: Grow.
Friday 21 March 2025 – Sunday 23 March 2025
The Slate Conference Centre. The University of Warwick, West Midlands CV4 7SH.
A weekend to explore how we can hold and grow the potential of our children and young people. ‘Every acorn has the potential to become a mighty oak tree.’
Each child and young person hold within them an innate, God-given potential for a life that is enduring, resilient, fruitful and beautiful. This weekend, we’ll lean into our calling – to hold the potential of every child and young person – and learn how we create environments that nurture, feed and allow growth into beauty, strength and flourishing in being rooted and grounded in love (see Ephesians 3:17).

Captain’s Log
Last week, as part of our Remembrance Sunday meeting, we explored the devastating impact of war and the biblical vision of peace as prophesied by Micah. It challenged us to consider our role as peacemakers in a world often marked by conflict. Through stories of World War I veterans and modern-day artists, we were reminded of the transformative power of peace and the importance of living out God's covenant of peace in our daily lives.
Takeaways:
- God promises a future of peace where nations will no longer wage war, and we are called to be proclaimers of this peace in our present reality.
- As Christians, we are challenged to practice fairness, justice, and forgiveness in our personal relationships and to advocate for peace between nations.
- Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount guide us in living as peacemakers while we await the full realisation of God's promised peace.
As we continue to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served in conflicts, let us also commit ourselves to being instruments of peace in our families, communities, and the wider world. May we, like the young girl in Baghdad I mentioned, have the courage to choose hope and peace even in the face of adversity.
Let us continue to pray for and work towards a world where swords are truly turned into ploughshares.

SUNDAY 17 November: SABBATH PRAYER
Praying for peace – Remembrance Sunday
Jesus Christ, friend and companion, we pray for all who have had to flee their homes because of conflict and who find themselves adrift in a land that isn’t home. We dream of a safer, kinder world, where every displaced person will find refuge and where communities destroyed by war will thrive again. Lord, in your mercy, heal and restore.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
MONDAY 18 November: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
South East Division – Youth Cell Group (24 Nov)
Pray for the young people of the South East Division, particularly for the Divisional Youth Cell at Staines this coming Sunday. Pray for our divisional youth specialist, the youth development worker and the youth apprentices as they come alongside, encourage and disciple the young people.
(Major Sue Pegram, Divisional Personnel Officer, South East Division)
TUESDAY 19 November: SERVING AND CARING
International Men’s Day
King Jesus, on this International Men’s Day, we pray that you will teach us to help our corps communities become places where men can grow more like you; where men can live out the encouragement the Apostle Paul gave to the leaders of the church in Corinth: ‘Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.’ (1 Corinthians 16:13-14, ESV).
(Captain Tim Swansbury, Rotherham Corps)
WEDNESDAY 20 November: GROWING IN FAITH
SA Worship Conference (23-24 November at William Booth College)
This is an opportunity for those who are passionate about contemporary sung worship in The Salvation Army to take time to develop their skills, cultivate a deeper connection to God through worship, and share in community with others. Pray that hearts and minds will be drawn deeper into God’s presence, and that people will come away with a deeper understanding of what it means to worship God. Pray that these experiences will be a catalyst for wider change as people return to their home corps/church.
(Nik King, Assistant Director of Music and Creative Arts)
THURSDAY 21 November: INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY
The Philippines Territory
We pray for the work and worship of The Salvation Army in the Philippines. We pray for boldness to share the gospel and for compassion in caring for those in need. We pray that God’s Spirit will energise the territorial leadership team, Colonels David and Elsa Oalang and Lieut-Colonels Rodolfo and Josalie Salcedo.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 22 November: JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION
Financial Inclusion and Debt Advice Service – Policy
Please pray that decision-makers in our governments will treat poverty and debt as ‘Kingdom’ issues – responding to them not just as fiscal exercises but with a real determination to bring about justice for all. Pray that The Salvation Army will use its voice to speak up for those whose lives are affected by these issues.
(Steve Wright, Quality Manager for the Debt Advice Service, Scotland and Northern Ireland)
SATURDAY 23 November: CARE FOR CREATION
Praying for COP29 (30 Nov to 12 Dec) – Action
Lord, you call your Army, your disciples, to stand up, speak out and challenge injustice. You call us to a ministry of reconciliation, restoring relationships between people and you and this beautiful creation. Give us the courage to play our part and to respond to your calling. (Major Heather Poxon, Territorial Environmental Officer)

As you may know, a Salvation Army Hall is primarily a church for the worship of God and as such, all activities conducted must be in accordance with Salvation Army principles and policies, in particular: no alcohol, smoking, gambling or similar activities. Please confirm your proposed hire of our premises does not include these activities.
If you would like to look round, then please let me know. I am almost always available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 9:30am-12:30pm but can also meet by appointment at other times.
If you wish to proceed, then the next step will be for me to draw up a Licence Agreement (a legally binding contract that protects the interests of both parties) in the name of an individual or company in respect of your group for signature prior to the event.
