published on 15 Nov 2024

Today, 150 years ago (15 November) The Salvation Army started its work in Wales.

There will be a special service in Merthyr Tydfil to celebrate the landmark anniversary.

Major Granville Myers, who supports the local church, says everyone is welcome to attend the service at The Salvation Army’s oldest active church in Wales.

Major Myers, said:

“We are excited for Merthyr Tydfil to be the venue at this special moment in our history, which everyone is welcome to share with us. Our prayer is for a new outpouring of God's Holy Spirit that will bring people to faith throughout the communities of Wales. We rejoice in lives that God has changed over the years.”

The Celebration Service at the church on Glebeland Place in Merthyr Tydfil will start at 7pm. The evening’s activities will be led by Lieutenant Colonel Jayne Roberts and the Territorial Prayer team and will feature Sound of Wales band.

The Salvation Army’s first meeting in Wales was at The Gospel Hall in Cardiff on November 15 in 1874. That was followed four years later by the first meeting in Merthyr as 21-year-old Kate Watts and Harriet Perkin were sent by The Salvation Army’s leadership to the growing industrial town to establish a branch of the church and ‘Bring the good news to all’.
