Canterbury heartened by Salvation Army idea to combat loneliness

published on 10 Dec 2024

The leaders of The Salvation Army in Canterbury say a new method of combatting loneliness they launched last month has been welcomed by people in the city.

Major Alison Friday, from the church and charity on Whitehorse Lane, recently launched Heart to Heart at The Canterbury Bakery, a café in Whitefriars Shopping Centre. Visitors are invited to come to the bakery where they will find Alison waiting to chat to them.

Alison spends two hours at the café on Wednesday and Thursday offering a presence if people want to chat and connect with someone.

She said: “This is open to anyone who needs to have a good old chat and a listening ear. Initially, my thoughts were around older people and loneliness at Christmas but I realised that in our community, I meet with people of all ages who feel lonely or isolated.

“There are a variety of reasons why people feel alone and these can grow at Christmas because it’s a season which focuses on connection and togetherness. I want this to be a reminder no one needs to be on their own and that there is someone out there who will listen to you.

“Since Heart to Heart started, I've had the privilege of connecting with 20 people during our two-hour sessions. Those who have attended represent a diverse range of groups, including people who are homeless, those struggling with loneliness, and even people who have just walked by. It has been truly humbling to provide a listening ear to such a variety of people and see how meaningful a simple conversation can be.”

Alison said she hopes to be able to carry on Heart to Heart in the New Year and praised everyone who has attended so far.

She said: “What has surprised me the most is the courage it takes for someone to step in and open up. It's a reminder that everyone carries unseen struggles, and the power of a listening ear can truly make a difference.  There is a real possibility that this will be extended. If people continue to come, then there is a clear need.

Heart to Heart is at The Canterbury Bakery, The Marlowe Arcade from 2.30pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday and from 9.30am to 11.30am on Thursday until 19 December. All are welcome.
