Prestigious Cathedral appointment for Salvation Army officer

A Salvation Army Officer has been made one of five new Canons at Newport Cathedral in a groundbreaking move by the Diocese of Monmouth.
Captain Kathryn Stowers is the Ecumenical Officer for Wales and says it is a rare privilege for Salvation Army officers to be appointed to a role such as this: “Being appointed as a Canon is an honorary and very unusual role, marking the good relationship between the Cathedral and The Salvation Army in Newport. This appointment cements the close relationship of mission, ministry and fellowship, which has been enjoyed by our denominations for many years. It’s very humbling working together.”
The appointment was made by the Bishop of Monmouth, Cherry Vann. Kathryn’s role will see her take part in the life of the Cathedral as a member of the College of Canons.
Dean Ian Black says “We are delighted that Kathryn has accepted the invitation to be an Ecumenical Canon of the Cathedral. Kathryn brings a commitment to serving those who may otherwise feel excluded and a deep belief that churches need to work together in both proclaiming and living the gospel. This will strengthen our partnership and we look forward to working closer with Kathryn and the Salvation Army to serve our city.”
The five new Canons were installed at a service of Choral Evensong at the Cathedral on Sunday 22 September.
