A resident of a Prestwich care home has been celebrating her centenary with the help of staff, her family and the Mayor, Councillor Stella Smith and Consort Mr John Smith.
More than twenty five members of Noreen's family attended the special party at The Salvation Army run home, Holt House.
Noreen's son, Peter, said: “When we were looking for a home for mum we instantly knew this was the right place because it's so warm and welcoming and the staff are truly wonderful. I'd like to thank Holt House for all the care and consideration they've shown mum. Theirs is a tough job, and I know that because I've seen them do it. The care here really is marvellous. She’s been made to feel particularly special which is so lovely to see. We’re very grateful to the staff here for arranging today. It's been a great day for mum and for all the family to celebrate with her.”
Local dancing group, The Old Stagers which is made up of around 15 volunteers put on a performance for Noreen, her fellow residents and family while they celebrated her milestone and enjoyed afternoon tea.
Councillor Stella Smith, Mayor, said: “Holt House is a special place and it’s clear to see the residents are happy here. There’s a wonderful atmosphere and it’s been great to celebrate Noreen’s birthday here today.”
Noreen, said: "I can't believe I'm 100. Today has been such a lovely surprise - it's been really wonderful."
The grandmother of five and great grandmother of three was born in Higher Broughton, Salford in 1915. After leaving school Noreen learnt book-keeping at college before beginning her working life at the age of 14 as a junior clerk and during her working life she held roles at a number of local businesses including Cussons Soap. Noreen is the very proud mother of her two children, Peter and Anita. She was widowed at 57 and didn't re-marry.
Holt House is run by The Salvation Army and provides accommodation for up to 31 residents over 60. In the service's most recent inspection by the local authority it was deemed to be 100% compliant across all areas. The Care Quality Commission’s report said: “The atmosphere was calm and relaxed. People were complimentary about the staff team. They said staff were, ‘very good’, ‘the staff are great’, ‘they are kind’, and the ‘staff are brilliant.”
The home was also recognised at our Social Services awards 2015 where staff received the older people’s services management team of the year award and was highly commended in the home of the year category.
This year The Salvation Army is celebrating 150 years of transforming lives and it is still at the heart of every community today, supporting those in need.
