Salvation Army’s Samantha Searle honoured as Watchet Town’s Volunteer of the Year
published on 9 Apr 2025
For Samantha Searle, volunteering isn’t just about giving time—it’s about giving hope. Whether it’s serving hot meals to those in need, delivering food parcels in the dead of night, or organising festive gifts for children, her selfless dedication has touched countless lives in Watchet. Last night, that commitment was celebrated as she received the town’s inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award at the Annual Town Meeting.
The award, introduced this year by Watchet Town Council, recognises individuals whose extraordinary efforts strengthen the community. Samantha is a corps Sergeant Major at Watchet Salvation Army and all the work she does for the local community is on a voluntary basis. She was nominated by residents for her tireless service—from running the Salvation Army Hall on Brendon Road as a warm space for vulnerable people to supporting the Quantock Foodbank, Little Saints Nursery, and more.
Samantha said, “This award isn’t just for me—it’s for everyone who believes in lifting others up. At The Salvation Army, we’re called to serve with love and practicality, whether that’s through a meal, a listening ear, or a helping hand. Watchet is my home, and its people are my family. To be recognised in this way is humbling, but the real reward is seeing lives changed."

Paul Billard, Divisional Leader for The Salvation Army in the Southwest, added: "Samantha’s award is a testament to her selfless hard work and unwavering commitment. It also reflects the deep esteem in which she’s held by the community she serves so passionately. Her actions embody The Salvation Army’s mission—bringing light where it’s needed most."
The ceremony, held at Watchet Community Centre, highlighted Samantha’s wide-ranging impact, including her advocacy for people who are homeless, coordination of community transport, and support for local events like Words in Watchet.
Samantha has been leading Watchet Salvation Army since 2015 and her mantra is: "There’s always more to do—and together, we can keep making a difference."
The Salvation Army in Watchet has been serving the community for 140 years offering pastoral care to those in need and practical support through various programs that promote social interaction, personal development, and a sense of belonging. For instance, the Mums and Tots group provides a supportive space for parents to connect and share experiences while their children participate in fun, educational activities.
Additionally, the church offers some respite from homelessness and financial hardship by distributing food parcels to those in need and offering free furniture and clothing to help struggling individuals and families.
