Keighley Salvation Army has kicked off its summer of sport with opportunities to watch matches and take part in activities at the church and community centre.
With Euros 2024, Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics all taking place over the next few weeks, there will be plenty of events for people looking to score some fun with sporting quizzes, a sports themed Sunday service and opportunities to watch matches in a community setting.
Church leader Major Imogen Stewart said: “Part of our mission at Keighley Salvation Army is to enjoy community life with each other, so we are really excited about this programme of events which will bring us all together to enjoy a brilliant summer of sports.
“We kickstarted it earlier this month with a treasure hunt, BBQ and indoor Olympic themed activities for kids. It was a blessing to see so many people there with us enjoying themselves.
“We will be showing some of the matches as well as hosting two sports quizzes and a Sunday Worship with a sporting theme looking at the attitudes of Eric Liddle, who won gold at the Paris Olympics 100 years ago running in his least favoured event, and his rival Harold Abrahams, focusing on Paul’s challenge (1 Corinthians 9: 24-25) to run for the greater prize, only found in Jesus.
“As well as bringing people together, these events will be a chance to show what Keighley Salvation Army has on offer for the community. We run a number of activities and support schemes which people will be able to ask us about. The events are open to everyone so please do come along and join us.”
As a church and charity, The Salvation Army is passionate about sports and the benefits it has for physical and mental health, as well as enjoying the outdoors it can be an opening for spiritual conversation and new relationships within our communities.
This year it is launched a Goals for Good campaign encouraging people to help end homelessness through football.
The next event at Keighley Salvation Army in High Street will be a Euro Quiz held on Friday 28 June at 7pm, a social sport themed family film night on Friday 5 July at 7pm. There will be a Summer Sports Quiz on Friday 12 July at 7pm and on Friday 2 August at 7pm, and a Sporting Service on Sunday 21 July at 10.30am.
Keighley Salvation Army supports the community in many ways with cookery classes, after school clubs, toddler groups, food support, meals for the homeless and vulnerable, refugee support, Sunday worship and much more. For more information search for them on Facebook.
