Spot the signs
Call 0800 808 3733, our confidential helpline if you suspect someone is a victim of modern slavery.
Modern slavery can be hard to spot.
Secrecy supports the inhuman trade in modern slavery. It’s hard to detect because it’s mostly hidden away and involves vulnerable people.
We are concerned that recent changes in law look set to make it harder to break the cycle of exploitation which holds many victims captive.
People you see in streets and shops, farms, and factories, building sites and bars could be living and working in appalling conditions, held against their will with violence and threats to themselves and their families.
Criminal gangs use intimidation and violence to secure silence and compliance, learn to spot the signs of modern slavery and you could help free someone from exploitation.
If you have come into contact with someone who you suspect may be a victim of modern slavery and in need of help, phone our free 24/7 confidential referral helpline: 0800 808 3733.
Spot the signs
You could come into contact with a victim of modern slavery without even realising; however there can be some tell-tale signs.
Some signs are physical:
- They may look anxious, dishevelled, or malnourished.
- They may have untreated injuries.
Some signs are less obvious:
- Someone paying for their travel
- Someone speaking for them
- Perhaps they are picked up and dropped off from work at unusual times
- They may not be sure of their own address
We can all play our part in helping people escape modern slavery and find protection and support to build a better life.
