One of the first people to qualify from a new Barista programme run by The Salvation Army in Carmarthen says the scheme could open doors for him

51 year old Chris Jones, from Llandeilo, graduated from the six-week course and now works one day a week at the church and charity’s Sally Ann’s Café in Llamas Street.

It’s assisted-working so that Chris, who has severe epilepsy and learning difficulties, can work alongside his carer, Karen Davies.

Chris enjoyed training to be a Barista and said: “I love this role. I’m enjoying meeting new people and making them happy by serving them what they enjoy. I’m trying to use the experience I’ve had here at The Salvation Army Café to get a job elsewhere. I think I’d be good in a bigger shop in the High Street.”

The scheme was put together by The Salvation Army’s Employment Plus team. It’s a fully qualified foundation level course covering every aspect of the role of a Barista including making coffee, hygiene, customer service and a certificate in food safety.

It’s designed to bridge a gap between unemployment and employment giving a helping hand to those looking for new skills.

Chris says the course has boosted his confidence dented by bullying during his education because of his medical condition: “People were always picking on me. Once, at the start of the summer, a boy at school stood on my arm and broke my wrist just as I was getting ready to go on holiday with my mum and dad to a caravan. I ended up with my wrist in plaster. This was a common thing.”

Jess Griffiths is an Employment Development Coordinator at Employment Plus in Carmarthen, who has worked closely with Chris during the training course:  “I have noticed a big change in him. Working in the café and serving customers has made him far more confident. A few weeks ago, during one of our regular meetings at the café here, he apologised and told me he had to go help the staff behind the counter as they looked busy. He would never have done that a few weeks ago. The change is incredible.”
