Boston Salvation Army to host open day as part of 140 years in the town

Have you ever wondered why The Salvation Army use brass instruments to play in the community? Or wondered what the Salvation Army do at their hall? These questions and more will be answered in a special 'open day' on Saturday 21 July at the Boston Corps, on 59 High Street.
Members of the public are invited to a free open day featuring live music, refreshments and a BBQ, craft activities, toddler play, face painting and guided tours of the church as well as an exhibition featuring historical items from the church which opened its doors on the present site in 1889. The items can be seen in a 'history room' - where old style uniforms and artefacts will be displayed.
Visitors can also meet the people who play in the bands (and junior bands) as well as the songsters, who regularly sing in worship and in the community. Many people identify with seeing The Salvation Army at Christmas Carol Services and the Civic Carol Service as well as Remembrance Sunday. Leaders from the 'Honeypot' will also be available to speak to - The Salvation Army's toddler group. There will be a space for prayer.
Leader of the church, Major Ged Nicoll said: "The Salvation Army is celebrating 140 years of ministry in Boston in November this year. This open event is for our community to see what we do and why we do it. Our open day provides the opportunity of learning more about the history of the Salvation Army in Boston as it has served the community here for 140 years, and what's more, how it impacts the community today. We provide support to people in need in the community through our Bridge programme (drop-in centre), as well as providing diverse support to people who are in need and vulnerable within the community. We also hold inspiring worship meetings every Sunday with quality Christian teaching for children and adults".
The event opens at 9.30am until 2.30pm on Saturday 21 July. Members of the public are also invited to the 140th anniversary weekend celebration on 17 November, that features a music festival in the evening.
