Cirencester Salvation Army hosts Digital Literacy Course for adults with limited reading skills.

In a world where technology is advancing at lightning speed, it’s easy to forget that not everyone feels confident navigating the digital landscape. For many adults, the digital age can feel overwhelming and isolating. But thanks to a new partnership between The Salvation Army, Hope Cirencester, and other local organisations, a free Digital Literacy Course is offering a lifeline to those who feel left behind.
This Monday, 24 February 2025, The Salvation Army in Cirencester hosted the first in a series of classes designed to empower adults with limited technology knowledge. Some 9 people attended the first session with classes taking place every week until Monday 7 April.
The course, titled “Getting Connected – Using Your Mobile Devices,” is open to anyone in the community who needs help mastering smartphones, computers, and online safety.

Bernie Mann, leader of Hope Cirencester, said: "We often take for granted that everyone navigates the digital world with ease, but the reality is, many in our community, especially those with reading difficulties, are being left behind. Imagine the isolation, the fear of being scammed, the simple frustration of not being able to connect with loved ones online. That's why Hope Cirencester's digital literacy course is so vital.”
“It's not just about learning how to use a phone or laptop; it's about bridging a gap, building confidence, and ensuring everyone feels included in our rapidly evolving society. We're seeing firsthand how empowering it is for our adult literacy group to connect digitally, learn alongside their neighbours, and finally feel like they're catching up. This isn't just a course; it's a lifeline."
Bryan Lang, leader of The Salvation Army in Cirencester, added: “We are thrilled to partner in this incredible initiative. At The Salvation Army, our mission has always been to serve our community in practical and meaningful ways, meeting people where they are and helping them grow. This program is a perfect example of that—empowering individuals with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly digital world, while offering hope and dignity through education. Together, we are not just teaching skills; we are transforming lives and building a stronger, more connected community."
The course is being led by David Young, an experienced adult education tutor from Adult Education Gloucestershire, with additional support from Bernie Mann and Kathy Folkestad of Hope Cirencester, Bryan Lang of The Salvation Army, and Sue Pilling of Cotswold District Council. Classes will take place every Monday from 2pm to 3.30pm at The Salvation Army Hall, 10 Thomas Street, Cirencester, GL7 2AX.
