Commonwealth Games 2014: Salvation Army to distribute 250,000 bottles of water

Around 50 Salvation Army volunteers will hand out 250,000 bottles of water during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

The initiative will be co-ordinated and funded by The Salvation Army, and follows similar programmes that saw 500,000 bottles distributed during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Volunteers will be at transport hubs across Glasgow to hand out the water and offer practical assistance to visitors and Glaswegians alike.

Major Russell Wyles, Divisional Commander for West Scotland, said: “The Salvation Army is excited to be involved in Glasgow 2014.

“The Commonwealth Games is going to be one of the biggest events this country has ever seen and our church and charity will be there to ensure everyone makes the most of the that experience.

“We are dedicated to caring for people and will be stationed around Glasgow this summer to offer compassionate support and practical help.

"There will also be a range of activities taking place at our corps and centres up and down the country, where visitors will receive a warm and friendly welcome."

Salvation army to man UN GIFT boxes

As the main provider of support for human trafficking in the UK, The Salvation Army will provide volunteers to man UN GIFT Boxes that will be placed around the city for the duration of the Games.
