Community urged to support Christmas appeal

A local church and charity, The Salvation Army’s Crewe Corps (church) has launched its annual Christmas Appeal which, last year supported 1850 local people and the organisation expects this number to increase significantly. 

Major Steven Watson, Church Leader at The Salvation Army’s Crewe Corps said: “We support some of the most in need families and vulnerable people throughout the year and particularly at Christmas. 

“This year universal credit has been rolled out in our area and this has led to a greater demand on our services. This has already resulted in a rise in the support we’ve provided and we’re conscious that, as we move closer to Christmas this will only increase. 

“We are so grateful to local people for their support, it’s a real community effort with work starting back in the spring.

“With need increasing this year we’re calling on the local community and businesses to lend their support by donating non-perishable food, toys, as well as money to purchase vouchers for older children. In total I expect to spend far more than in previous years.  We always fulfil the referrals we receive.”

“So far we have already received more than 2100 referrals from local agencies.

“We have a team of volunteers who have been working hard this week sorting the presents. In total, over the week they’ve put in over 150 hours which we are immensely grateful for. Every year we work with local agencies such as social services and schools who help us to ensure the most in need receive our support.”

Gifts can include anything from soft and educational toys for the very youngest child, to games, toys and accessories for older children.

Major Steven, added: “It’s wonderful to know that the children’s faces light up when they open their Christmas presents. If you have children, grandchildren, or children you support, think of what they might like in their Christmas stocking and consider buying an extra present and donating it.  We’re asking for brand-new toys or gifts so the families we support feel extra special.

“At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, someone who came so that every person could “have life and life in all its fullness.

“We want to make that a reality for people again this Christmas. We want to make Christmas 2017 a special one for all those who we help.”

This Christmas there are lots of ways local people can get involved:

17th December at 4pm – Traditional Candlelight service

24th December at 4pm – Crib service

Christmas Day at 10am – worship
