First Minister of Wales thanks Skewen flood volunteers

The First Minister of Wales has extended thanks to The Salvation Army for the help provided by Skewen Corps and the Emergency Response Vehicle volunteers.
Mark Drakeford MS made the comments in a letter published on the Neath Port Talbot Council website after a visit to the village at the weekend.
As well as meeting those directly affected by the floods, the First Minister spent time speaking with Salvation Army leaders and volunteers, personally thanking those involved in the emergency response and for their ongoing support.
In the letter, Mark Drakeford said:
"I had the opportunity to visit Skewen on Sunday and it was heart breaking to see the devastating effect of the incident on the local community.”
He continued…In particular, I would like to thank the Salvation Army, for the support it has provided to the community since Storm Christoph."
Skewen Salvation Army church hall continues to be used as a relief centre supporting those living in temporary accommodation with essential supplies. Volunteers are also providing food, drinks and cleaning products from a temporary hut at the scene.
Captain Jo Walters, The Salvation Army’s leader in Skewen said:
“It was a pleasure to meet the First Minister and to introduce him to some of the amazing volunteers who have been helping in their community since the flood. Skewen is a fantastic village and everyone has just pulled together to help one another.
“The Salvation Army has been at the heart of this village for over 130 years helping those in need and it is our privilege to serve the community in its hour of need now.”
A JustGiving page initially set up by The Salvation Army to help the Skewen community at the start of the Covid pandemic has now reach over £30,000. Money will be used to help with people’s immediate needs whilst they are out of their homes but will also be used to provide longer-term support for affected residents as they eventually return to their homes.
Mr Drakeford also used the letter to give thanks to the immediate response from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Neath Port Talbot Council, the Coal Authority and Natural Resources Wales.
