Forest of Dean Salvation Army Church celebrated at Pride of Coleford Awards

The Forest of Dean Salvation Army has been recognised with an award at the Pride of Coleford Awards for its work in the community. This award shines a light on the church’s efforts in supporting victims of domestic abuse; helping people experiencing homelessness; and for providing food for over 200 children in partnership with Two Rivers Housing during the summer months.

The Pride of Coleford Awards ceremony, which was held at the end of November, is Coleford Town Council’s way to thank “the exceptional individuals who make our community a great place to live, work, and play.” Earlier in the year, the Council invited residents to nominate those who are truly making a difference.

Vivienne Prescott, the Commanding Officer for Forest of Dean Salvation Army, was at the ceremony to accept the award and said the recognition means the world to her and her team as it comes from the community that they strive to serve.

She said: “The award reflects our mission to support and uplift those around us. We’re proud to know that our efforts have made a positive impact. This recognition wouldn’t be possible without our incredible team of volunteers. Their dedication and compassion are the beating heart of our mission. They give their time and energy to ensure our community is supported and cared for.”

“It’s a joy and a privilege to stand alongside our neighbours during their toughest times,” she said, adding that partnerships with organisations like Two Rivers Housing, FOD District Council, Trussel Trust, and Barmwood Trust have been vital to their success.

The Salvation Army in Forest of Dean is a beacon of hope for those facing homelessness by connecting individuals in need with the local service P3, ensuring they receive essential support, including food, dry clothing, and even sleeping bags and tents in extreme cases, all while providing a warm, safe haven during the day.

Collaborating with specialised organisations, the church also aids those experiencing domestic abuse by offering emergency clothing and long-term assistance in accessing local grants to furnish new homes, ensuring that children receive toys during their temporary stays.
