Furniture ReUse Showroom Opens in Falkirk
published on 4 Sep 2014
Leaders of The Salvation Army in Falkirk are hoping a new furniture will boost their outreach work in the town – and help cut down on landfill.
The Salvation Army in Falkirk officially opened its Furniture ReUse showroom, which specialises in furniture and other large household items. Volunteers at the store, under the guidance of project manager Ian Browse, will also be on hand to offer a range of support to people referred for assistance.
Profits from the project will go directly to The Salvation Army’s church and community centre in Woodside Court, which runs a range of programmes including a drop-in centre, after-school club and community cafe.
Daniel Rous, Divisional Charity Shops Operations Manager, said: “This is an exciting time for The Salvation Army in Falkirk. The ownership for the shop comes from the local corps and so when people buy a piece of furniture they are helping the work of The Salvation Army locally.
“The project has had fantastic support so far, and a number of companies and charities have gone the extra mile to help us get it up and running. These include Gemini Supplies, Signs Express, Falkirk Council, Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce, The Salvation Army charity shop in Falkirk, Home Aid West Lothian, Criminal Justice Services, Robertson Van Hire, Relationship Scotland and Taighean Design. “We’re hoping the shop will also have a positive environmental effect by helping cut down on the amount of the furniture that ends up in landfill.”
Lieutenant-Colonel Carol Bailey, The Salvation Army’s leader in the east of Scotland, said: “During a time when budgets are tight and there is great need in our communities, the Furniture ReUse project provides a great place to purchase good quality items at a reasonable cost, as well as being informal calling points for local people to find support.”
The Salvation Army’s Furniture ReUse showroom is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. Collection of unwanted but usable items is free of charge within the Falkirk area.
