The Haven cafe in Neath needs volunteers to avoid closure
published on 3 Oct 2024
A popular café in Neath that is up for a major national mental-health award could be forced to close because of a shortage of volunteers.
The much-valued local cafe is part of The Haven, in Angel Street, which was opened by The Salvation Army in 2021. It provides help with benefits, housing advice, counselling services and basic medical care as well as accredited educational programmes for those in need in the town.
Manager Christina Davies, said:
“We have reached a crisis point and the worst-case scenario is the café could close for good if we cannot find additional help to run our events and services. Currently, the café is closed more than its open, which is having a detrimental effect on our customers. For many it’s the only place they can get a hot meal. Our community wants and needs it - they tell us that all the time.”
Christina Davies added: “If anyone can spare some time it would be such a big help as we urgently need people to work in our cafe. We have a range of different roles that need filling, from making tea and coffee, to preparing breakfast and helping with the lunch service.”
The café is part of the Haven’s nomination for the Community Impact Award in this year’s Welsh Mental Health & Wellbeing Awards due to take place at The Mercure Holland House, Cardiff, where the winners will be announced on 9 October ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October.
