Lifehouse manager to be Commonwealth Games baton bearer

A Lifehouse manager is to represent Sunderland as one of the Queen’s baton bearers to mark the start of the Commonwealth Games.
Christine Ritchie, who runs Swan Lodge, which provides supported accommodation for up to 65 people who are homeless, is one of 14 people selected to represent the North East as part of the Baton’s journey through 68 countries over 294 days before the start of the games at the end of July.
Christine was nominated for being ‘an extraordinary asset to The Salvation Army’ who is ‘selfless and always goes the extra mile and encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves’.
Christine said: “I’m so excited to represent The Salvation Army as one of the baton bearers for this year’s Commonwealth Games. It was a huge honour to be nominated. I’m still not sure who put me forward!
“Swan Lodge led the way in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee having lit the beacon to mark the occasion last month. To be a baton bearer feels even more special knowing it’s celebrating her majesty’s 70 years on the throne.
“I’ll be carrying this on behalf of all the clients and staff from Swan Lodge, who will be there to cheer me on, as well as The Salvation Army.
“I was worried I might have had to run with it but I’ve been told I can walk which is a relief!”
Swan Lodge will also host their own Commonwealth Games events this summer.
Christine added: “Events like this give our lads and lasses the opportunity to have fun, celebrate and take part in team building activities.”
The baton will set off from the University of Sunderland’s Reg Vardy Centre at 6.12pm on Thursday, will be taken along the sea front and then arrive at Cliff Park at 6.45pm.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games begin on July 28th and will run until August 8th.
