MP Sheila Gilmore launches jobs club at Edinburgh Salvation Army

A Salvation Army scheme that teaches work-related skills is offering hope for unemployed people in Edinburgh.

The new jobs club at our City Corps on East Adam Street Road was launched by local MP Sheila Gilmore.

She said the initiative, called Employment Plus Local, would help people find work and get their lives back on track.

The club is run by Salvationist Kenneth Henderson, who is a retired mental health nurse and lecturer, with support from commanding officers Albert and Patricia Kidd. There will also be additional help from two student volunteers.

It runs every Thursday from 10am to 2pm and gives job seekers a wide range of work-related training. There will also be free computer to help create CVs and internet access for job searches.

Ms Gilmore said: "I have been impressed by the work of the Edinburgh City Corps and I'm confidant the jobs club will be a success.

“What The Salvation Army is doing in Edinburgh can make a positive difference to many lives.”

Commanding officer Albert Kidd said: “Today’s unemployment figures are bleak and for many people, being out of work can have a profound effect on their emotional wellbeing.

“We’re delighted to be leading the way at Edinburgh and helping individuals get back into work.

“By creating links with local business, training providers and employment agencies, we seek to enhance community ties between job seekers and employers.”
