Ms Jones heard how The Salvation Army works with those who need help and support including those experiencing homelessness in Newport:

“I was amazed at how much The Salvation Army do and have done over their 150 years in Wales. A massive thank you to staff and volunteers on behalf of the people of our city and region. Speaking to those who’ve been supported by The Salvation Army it is clear much that needs to change, particularly around housing, rehabilitation and prevention for people leaving prison or discharged from hospital. Prioritising prevention could save our NHS and justice system millions. We must approach policy setting differently in future to achieve better results and outcomes for people.”

Captain Kathryn Stowers, leader of The Salvation Army in Newport, said:

"It was a chance to showcase the breadth of our engagement with the community, from our Safe Haven Cafe and charity shop to the partnership work we do with other support services. Ms Jones was interested in how our location in the city centre allows us to reach out and connect with our community."

Zoe Mathias is the Outreach Programme Manager for Homelessness Services run by The Salvation Army in the city.

“It was good of Laura to visit our drop-in Service and Citadel. We are a small but important provision, being the first port of contact for people who are rough sleeping across Newport. We support them through their journey into accommodation. We spoke to Laura about the multifaceted work the Salvation Army does and explained our concerns over some of the barriers we often face as a service.”

Laura Anne Jones is Shadow Minister for Housing, Local Government and the Armed Forces and she thanked The Salvation Army workers and volunteers for sharing their stories with her during the visit.
