Salvation Army keeps children connected during summer holidays

Children at a primary school in Plymouth have been able to enjoy a fun-filled summer thanks to their local Salvation Army.

Lieutenants Tom and Rachel Dunham, who lead our community church in the town, set up a scheme to give out activity pack to families over the past six weeks.

Tom says the packs have been a hit with the kids and helped keep them connected in the absence of holiday clubs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Each week The Salvation Army team gave out about 40 packs, which included a craft activity, a small toy, a snack and drink, a copy of The Salvation Army magazine Kids Alive! and a challenge to create something artistic for display on the window of the church.

Tom said: “The idea came about from a conversation with the head teacher of our local school, Whitleigh Primary. She was concerned that the children would miss out on not having their usual summer clubs so we decided to put together the activity packs.

“The packs have been really popular with the children and it has enabled us to reach out to some new families in the area.

“We’ve also been impressed by the children’s artwork, which we have put on display in the windows of our hall.”
