Kathy Betteridge, Director of Anti Trafficking and Modern Slavery at The Salvation Army said:
"The Salvation Army can confirm that the man rescued from slave-like conditions in Carlisle yesterday has now been referred to us to receive specialist support to help him begin the long journey to recover from his horrendous ordeal.
We have been delivering support for the past seven years through a Government contract to all adult victims of modern slavery referred from England and Wales. It gives people access to the help they need such as somewhere safe to stay, counselling, and financial, medical and legal support.
This is a truly horrific and shocking case however it sadly resonates with the experiences of many people who come to us having undergone similarly harrowing experiences. This is why it is essential that everyone is alert to the signs of slavery around them and reports anything suspicious. The Salvation Army operates a 24/7, confidential referral helpline (0300 303 8151) for anyone who suspects that they or someone they have come across may be a victim of modern slavery and in need of help.
We will work to provide hope for this man so in time he can join the thousands of survivors of modern slavery whose lives have been positively transformed and been able to move to live independently having received specialist support from The Salvation Army, our partners and other agencies.”
