Stand in solidarity with victims of modern slavery this Anti-Slavery Day

This October The Salvation Army is urging people to stand in solidarity with the millions of victims of modern slavery across the globe by wearing a special edition temporary tattoo and joining the campaign online using #WeAreNotForSale.

In the lead-up to Anti-Slavery Day, Thursday 18 October, the temporary tattoos are available from 96 Salvation Army charity shops across England for a £1 donation. All profits will go to the charity’s Victim Care Fund, which provides additional support to help survivors of modern slavery.

The tattoo depicts a group standing against a barcode, reinforcing the message that people are not for sale and should never be treated as a commodity.

Director of Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery for The Salvation Army Kathy Betteridge says: “When people are held as slaves they are treated as objects that can be bought and sold, with the ways in which they are exploited limited only by the imagination of their trafficker.

“Victims are made to feel powerless, isolated, and tricked that there is no one who will help them,” she says.

“By wearing this tattoo, not only will money be raised for The Salvation Army’s Victim Care Fund which provides additional support to help survivors of modern slavery, but you will be standing in solidarity with victims and helping raise awareness that there are people and agencies out there to help them.”

The Salvation Army has held the government contract to provide specialist support to adult victims of modern slavery in England and Wales for seven years and has supported more than 7,000 victims in that time.

Kathy says: “We really want to encourage people to share this message, either by wearing the tattoo or by sharing it online with their friends and families.

“We all have a part to play and together we can be a voice for the voiceless. Victims are abused and exploited for sex, drug production, cheap labour and much more. We cannot allow this to continue.”

Supporters are being encouraged to help The Salvation Army spread the message online by sharing photos of them wearing their temporary tattoos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #WeAreNotForSale. A special edition Facebook frame is also available for profile photos, by selecting ‘Add Frame’ and searching ‘Anti-Slavery Day 2018’.
