A unique range of t-shirts and merchandise inspired by the historic Strawberry Field site in Liverpool has been unveiled. The gift items will help The Salvation Army raise funds to realise its vision of re-opening Strawberry Field to the public for the first time, while making a difference to the lives of young people with learning disabilities.
As well as lyrics from the song written by John Lennon and made famous by The Beatles, the image of the iconic Strawberry Field gates appears on t-shirts, mugs and jackets.
Thousands of people from across the globe visit the gates every year to have their picture taken in front of them and this is the first time The Salvation Army has produced the image on merchandise.
Strawberry Field was once a children's home run by The Salvation Army from the 1930s until 2005. John Lennon was inspired to pen the hit, Strawberry Fields Forever, after jumping over the wall as a child and regularly playing in the grounds when staying with his aunt Mimi who lived nearby. For John, it was a place of peace and refuge.
The Salvation Army’s vision hopes to see Strawberry Field open as a training hub for young people with learning disabilities as well as a visitor experience which will tell the story of John Lennon's special connection with the site. The new training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities will help them learn skills, gain work experience, grow in confidence and give them the opportunity for future employment.
The range of items start at £9; proceeds will help realise The Salvation Army’s vision to re-open Strawberry Field, forever.
