Zip wiring raises funds for the community

A group of 15 volunteers and members from The Salvation Army in Ellesmere Port took part in a sponsored zip wire adventure in North Wales to raise funds which will be used to support the community.

The group aged between 19 and 61 travelled to Zip World in Blaenau Ffestiniog to take part in the adventure which saw them each travel more than a mile via a zip wire.

Lieutenant Louise Brown, Church (corps) Leader at Ellesmere Port, said:

“We were keen to come up with a fundraising idea which would capture the imagination of the community as well as being a challenge. We didn’t expect it to rain – the weather has been pretty awful which has added to the sense of achievement we all felt when we completed the adventure. 

“The money we raised will go towards supporting the community here in Ellesmere Port. We run a busy programme here which makes a difference to local people.”

Laurence Sandman, a volunteer at the corps who also took part, said: “Flinging myself down a cold, wet, welsh mountain was a real challenge especially given the weather conditions. It was a pretty daunting sight when we first arrived and saw the course. The big motivating factor for us all was raising as much money as we can to support the community work which takes place at the corps.”

In total the group raised more than £600.

The zip wire adventure was part of a series of fundraising activities undertaken by the corps which included a 55km trek in Iceland which Church Leader, Louise Brown completed in June with volunteer Lilian Frost. 

The Salvation Army in Ellesmere Port welcomes the community to join them at Sunday worship at 10:30am every week. In addition a number of weekly activities are run at the corps to support local people. To find out more visit here or follow the Corps Facebook page
